Pasta Transfer Sensory Activity

I love activities that require materials you already have in your home.  In fact, most of the activities I plan to share do not require purchasing extra “stuff.”  Often, there’s no need to buy more stuff that will ultimately clutter your home, when most children are perfectly content playing with and exploring common household objects.

Sometimes the simplest activities turn out to be the ones that our children love the most.  This happens to be the case with this pasta transfer activity in our home.

The set up and prep is SUPER easy.  All you need are two containers, a transfer object, and dry pasta.

 Suggested Materials:

Containers: tupperware containers, pails, buckets, or even large cups

Transfer Object: small cup, shovel, spoon, ladle, or hands

Pasta: I like to get the multicolored pasta for extra visual effect, but any kind will work fine.

Activity:

Put dry pasta in one container.  Model moving the pasta from one container to the other. Once all of the pasta is transferred from one container to the next, transfer it back! Have the child explore and try the activity on their own.  You can also let them play with the pasta with their hands inside the container as well to encourage a rich sensory experience.

Optional Adaptations:

Instead of pasta, try it with other materials as well such as rice, cotton balls, pom poms, or dry beans.

Leave a comment to share what materials you used and how your child liked the activity!
